The Artist
Izabel Rothman (Izzi) is a Philadelphia based interdisciplinary artist. Using glass, fibers, wood, and mixed media, they create installations and sculptural works that investigate themes of disability, chronic pain, and growth through unideal conditions. With a background in human microbiology, Izzi is inspired by natural history museum curation, and biological and sociological function through adversity. They began working in glass in 2018 and use the medium as a vehicle for reflecting on the similarities of the material to disabled bodies, and other underrepresented and misunderstood groups. Their work is informed by personal experience and the movement of overcoming obstacles, as well as the human ability of adaptation.
Izzi has a decade-long background in ceramics as both an artist and teacher. Their work has been shown as part of the Cherry Street Pier 2022 show- Pier Review, Dodomu Gallery 2023 online show- Lines and Other Forms, and The Temple Contemporary’s 2023- Message Received. They are currently working towards their BFA in glass at Tyler School of Art and Architecture and are the recipient of the 2023 Partner Scholarship at Corning Museum of Glass.
