We make and sell primarily pens (ballpoint, rollerball and fountain), but also keychains, bottle stoppers, letter openers, birdhouse ornaments and other household accessories using a wide variety of materials (i.e., not just wood, but also acrylic, resin, stone, polymer clay, etc.). Each pen uses the highest quality components with fine detailing on metal parts. A pen body is selected for its beauty & character & then prepared by hand and turned on a wood lathe. Once the desired shape is achieved, the body is finished with a sealing product to ensure a durable finish. The pen bodies are buffered to a lustrous sheen and assembled with the utmost care and attention to detail. The same care is used to produce the other items in our catalog.

Marquetry: Wood inlay tables, mirrors, art panels. After the design is created it is tweaked into a fine line graphic drawing. I decide on the wood combinations (and mother-of-pearl, web turquoise, stone). The veneers and other materials are cut with many tools. The pieces are adhered with wood cement to an MDF board. I sand the pieces for a smooth finish then press to give even pressure. The pieces are finished with an acrylic urethane (lacquer) and a semi-gloss finish. The frames are made of maple or cherry. I work with one artisan.

Kaaren designs and hand crafts earrings, bracelets, necklaces and rings using mainly sterling silver with touches of copper, brass and some gold to create mixed metal pieces. Kaaren starts with both sheet metal and wire. She cuts, forms, hammers, and solders the metal into the finished jewelry she offers for sale. Patterning the metal using steel plates, screens, laces, paper and fabrics, Kaaren also embellishes some of her work with semi-precious stones. Kaaren’s art reflects her love of geometric forms combined in creative designs which are simple and sophisticated. Recently, she has added more organic forms to her repertoire with a collection of leaf earrings, pins and necklaces. All of Kaaren’s work is hand crafted in her home-based studio in Center City Philadelphia.

SJM Ceramics creates one of a kind ceramic pieces inspired by the beauty of the natural world as well as fantasy within nature.
